Drilldowns & linked data
Move from a report value to its supporting detail, related reports, and permitted Moodle records without losing context.
How drilldowns work
A report definition can attach an action to a displayed value. Depending on the column and available data, the action can open a detail modal, a related report, a heatmap, or an existing Moodle page. Drilldowns explain the records behind a total while keeping the original report available.
Value details
Inspect grades, activity, related rows, or another focused breakdown.
Linked reports
Open a related installed report with supported row context and filters.
Moodle records
Continue to a permitted course, user, activity, grade, or other native page.
Detail modals
Focused modals are useful when supporting detail is small enough to review without navigating away. Close the modal to return to the same report table, filters, and selected workflow. Calendar and heatmap modals follow the additional rules described in Heatmaps & calendar drilldowns.
Linked reports
A linked-report action depends on its destination report being installed and available. Supported links can carry identifiers from the selected row—such as a user, course, or activity—and use them as destination filters. If the required report is not installed, the interface can explain that dependency instead of opening an incomplete result.
Moodle records
Definitions can link report values to existing Moodle pages when the record identifier and destination are supported. These links provide navigation only; Moodle still applies the permissions and availability rules of the destination page.
Access & context
- The source report requires its normal capability, audience, enabled-state, and plan checks.
- A linked report independently checks its own audience, enabled state, plan, and feature entitlement.
- A native Moodle destination independently checks Moodle capabilities and record visibility.
- The
drilldownorcalendarentitlement may control premium actions. - A link never grants access that the current user did not already have.
